People for Play

A campaigning workshop and picnic

WHERE: Coram’s Fields, 93 Guilford St, London WC1N 1DN

WHEN: 10.00am Saturday 9 September

This free event will bring together seasoned campaigners for play with those just starting out on their journey to share tips, successes and challenges; and develop skills and knowledge to help them campaign with confidence.

Invited speakers include Friends of Market Place Playground, Finchley; and campaigners from Ravensbourne Park, Catford. They will share inspiring stories of starting and growing grassroots play campaigns, influencing decision makers and sourcing funds for play.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided. Children are welcome – there will be playworkers on site running junk modelling, street games and other activities for the duration of the event.

All attendees will receive the pilot play campaign toolbox with ideas, case studies, tip sheets and other resources to help them become effective play campaigners.

Reserve your free space(s) by emailing info@londonplay.org.uk

Current work
This two year project sees London Play working alongside local play campaigners, supporting them to successfully challenge threats to local play spaces or services; and influence decisions relating to play.
London Play in the news
The Guardian has shone a spotlight on one of the campaigns London Play is supporting through the Communities United for Play initiative: in Lewisham,  parents and children are angry that developers have firstly taken over the only playground in the area, and then failed to reopen it as promised.

London Play Press Releases
A Hackney adventure playground has ‘outplayed’ others from across the capital to win the title of London Adventure Playground of the Year 2023. Shakespeare Walk Adventure Playground was one of 16 shortlisted in the London Adventure Play Awards last week to join the hotly-anticipated annual event run by the charity London Play.

Award entries are in the form of short (2 mins max!) films made by children. As always, recognising and celebrating the special role of adventure playgrounds in children’s lives is the driving force behind this annual event. But we also welcome entries from other open access London play settings and of course, Play Streets!

  • Playworker Dream Team Award

Adventure play
OK, so WE KNOW that adventure playgrounds are worth their weight in gold. Our Play Works project (2015-20) supported play workers to make sure they had the evidence to convince potential funders of the same.
Other events
This February half term holiday Hackney Museum will be running activities inspired by the new Celebrating Hackney’s Adventure Playgrounds exhibition, which runs until 01 June.
