Celebrate London’s great re-opening with Formula Fun – bringing the excitement of London Play’s famous go kart build and race events to central London this summer!

Yes! London is re-opening and we are inviting you to witness the biggest and best build, race and decorate go kart event that the capital has ever seen, as part of the Mayor’s Let’s Do London campaign. Between Saturday 21 August and Sunday 05 September we will be running pop-up events in 19 locations across the central city – with kids building their own karts and competing not just on speed but also going all out on extravagant decorations! Teams of super-keen children have already signed up and are now busily dreaming and preparing to make the most awesomely decorated karts the city has ever seen.

The opening event will be in Regents Park on Saturday 21 August with two karts themed around Shakespearean woodland fairies; and you will not want to miss the final event in Spitalfields on Sunday 05 September. This will see four teams creating food-themed karts and competing for the title of ‘fastest dish’ in the ‘À la Karte’ grand finale

See below for the full event schedule (NB subject to change, please check back before travelling)

London Play is visiting streets, estates, adventure playgrounds and parks with all the materials, tools and decorations needed for a team of super keen kids to build and decorate their very own go kart. Plus, our dedicated two-person kart crew to guide and support.

Once complete, the team will take turns putting their kart through its paces. Each kart will complete a lap of honour in the surrounding neighbourhood, past shops and eateries for everyone to come out, enjoy the spectacle and celebrate our return to the streets.

These events are funded by the Mayor of London as part of the £6m Let’s Do London campaign to encourage Londoners and visitors back into central London. All brakes off for a #SummerofPlay!

NOTE: All spaces for these events have now been allocated. If you would like to go on the waiting list, or to register as a supporter of London Play and get advance notice of other events and opportunities, click below to drop us a line.

Adventure play
OK, so WE KNOW that adventure playgrounds are worth their weight in gold. Our Play Works project (2015-20) supported play workers to make sure they had the evidence to convince potential funders of the same.

We are making sure that London kids don’t miss out on the chance to build and race go karts this summer. Our whatever-happens-with-covid friendly ‘Together A-Kart’ format has been tried and tested to great success in 2020 as this film shows!

Where: At an adventure playground near you
When: Tuesday 27Thursday 29 July 2021

The London Play team will be visiting three adventure playgrounds over three days, with two teams at each site given a pile of wood, wheels and some metal bits along with a few tools – and four hours to build a go kart from scratch. Then, they will race!

There are thrills, spills and a ridiculous amount of fun – so get in touch to let us know if your adventure playground is up for it.

We are very grateful for the generous sponsorship of the Henry Surtees Foundation in making this event possible. See you out there!

Bring back lockdown! (but only the best bits, of course)

Open your street for play, and come together with your neighbours on Car Free Day this September to celebrate freedom and togetherness.

Where? On your street!
When:  Sunday 19 September 2021

Over the last difficult year, many have come to see the streets where they live through new eyes. The importance of good relationships with neighbours, safe and clean local spaces and the benefits of less traffic have become very apparent.

Car Free Day is a great opportunity to celebrate the silver linings of the pandemic. Run a trial play street, launch a new regular play street, add a special extra date to your existing play street; or just have a street party. However you choose to make it happen, just seize the day and see how that space outside your door can come alive with community spirit when the cars stop for a while.

We can help! Get in touch to find out how to make it happen in your borough.
