London Play’s submission to the government’s Curriculum and Assessment Review calls for a greater focus on play in schools – both within the curriculum and beyond it.
The submission includes seven practical suggestions:
- All teachers to undergo play training to understand its benefits
- An expectation in the curriculum that opportunities to take a play-based approach to learning will be adopted wherever possible
- A minimum standard for length of playtimes
- Schools to sign up to a charter on play
- Standards for size and quality of school play areas
- No more removing play as a punishment
- Above all, listen to children and young people.
