Olympic play park designers announced
14 December 2011
Opportunities for tree climbing, den building and to "have everyday adventures in nature" will be on offer in the Olympics Park following the 2012 Games. Erect Architecture, the award-winning designer of the Kilburn Grange Park Adventure Playground, has won the competition to create a visitor centre and playground in the green river valley of the north park.
The judging panel comprised representatives from the Olympic Park Legacy Company, the local community, and included play advocate Tim Gill of rethinking childhood, who commented: "The outdoor space has great potential to offer immersive, challenging, engaging play experiences."
Play safety experts Children's Play Advisory Service will also be part of the north park team. The south park competition was won by James Corner Field Operations, a New York-based design practice which will to create the 50 acre south park. This will feature a tree-lined promenade with a ‘Southbank feel', and which is likely to be used for cultural programmes, food stalls and other attractions. The London-based Playlink will be play consultant to the south park team.
